TORONTO, Mar. 12 2007 -- The Packaging Assocation of Canada today announced the signing of a partnership agreement with the Virginia-based Sustainable Packaging Coalition, designed to fast-track sustainable packaging methods across Canada.
PAC is often referred to as the voice of the Canadian packaging industry. The association provides the network as a means to educate, grow opportunities, reduce costs and regulate affairs. SPC is sought after as the authority in sustainable packaging in the U.S. packaging community and beyond.
Jim Downham, CEO of PAC says, "The green movement has reached a fevered pitch in Canada and is dominating the political landscape. PAC has endorsed the SPC vision and approach as a process by which the Canadian packaging community can contribute to the green movement."
The packaging community is also feeling customer pressure to improve the sustainability of its products. On September 22, 2006, Wal-Mart announced plans to measure its 60,000 worldwide suppliers on their ability to develop sustainable packaging and conserve natural resources. The packaging industry is scurrying to adopt the program, but requires education and information resources to achieve more sustainable packaging solutions.
As an initial collaboration, SPC and PAC will develop a sustainable packaging curriculum. This will be a program of study created for the packaging community and professionals.
Anne Johnson, Director of SPC says, "Since 2003, our mandate has been to help the packaging community achieve sustainable packaging systems that are economically robust and provide benefit throughout the life cycle of a package. PAC is a recognized educational authority in the packaging industry and has the talent to quickly create and deliver a quality product."
PAC has contracted Walter Soroka Associates of Brantford, ON, Canada to jointly work with SPC and PAC towards the development of a sustainable packaging curriculum. Downham says, "Walter Soroka is one of the leading authorities on packaging education in North America and we are delighted that Walter has agreed to lead this curriculum initiative."
The Sustainable Packaging Coalition is a project of GreenBlue, a not-for-profit organization that stimulates the creative redesign of industry by focusing the expertise of professional communities to create practical solutions, resources, and opportunities for implementing sustainability. The SPC is an industry working group inspired by cradle to cradle principles and has grown from nine founding members in 2003 to over 90 companies today.
The Packaging Association of Canada is a not-for-profit Canadian corporation established in 1952. PAC membership includes over 450 corporate companies and 1000 associate members from some of the most recognized North American retailers, consumer packaged goods manufacturers, packaging converters, suppliers, packaging machinery and professional service companies. PAC is directed by a volunteer board of directors from the member companies.
